Craziness Is In Our Coal Region Water???

Shamokin Coal Region Fish ManSince I was a late teen, my friend’s boyfriend (much older than both of us, of course, as I was the only “loser” afraid of boys until after high school) would always tease me that people east of Second Street were affected by the public water. He was essentially saying that it made you crazy and that it had powerful toxins. What kind of shit is that to tell an impressionable 15 year old?

Of course, as a high school honor student and top 10 graduate, I couldn’t rightly believe this absurdity, could I?  But as I thought more and more about it, it began to make some kind of crazy-sense to me. My mind works very differently from most other people, so he did not realize that I felt that I NEEDED to go on an excursion to decipher this conundrum. BTW Brian, thanks A LOT (sarcastic.)

As we traveled out Rt. 125 and made a left onto the dirt road toward the Excelsior Dam, I majorly dented my parents’ newly acquired SUV in order to prove a point.

My friend and I went “swimming” in the frigid waters of the Excelsior Dam, which supposedly feeds the Shamokin/Coal Township’s water system. The water was horrendous, murky and full of fish with strange appendages.

The Moral of the Story?

Nothing untoward happened, nothing out of the ordinary. Oh, my friend, however, did sprout gills and can now only breath under water at the Excelsior Dam, but that’s normal, right?

Maybe our water IS to blame……….

Your friend didn’t happen to eat some Gillyweed before you went swimming?

Dear Mr. Spooks, it is quite possible that she did eat Gillyweed OR perhaps ingested wormwood, the main ingredient in absinthe, we’ll never know… She is mostly at the water damn with her new fellow denizen of the deep.
