Hot Shamokin Party Spots #4

PLEASE read disclaimer again because I do not want to get sued nor am I positive if these places are still in existence.

#1 Excelsior Water Dam — While heading off route 125 N before the turn for the Fire Tower, you make a left onto an unpaved, yet surprisingly smooth dirt road. This fact could also be because the owner has recently decided to make use of the land and has fixed the road, so BEWARE!

You’d make a right after about 1/2 mile or so onto concealed road and park your vehicle shortly thereafter.

Once at the dam, feel free to party and take a dip in the frigid, murky water. I just hope you don’t have an aversion to fish swimming closely around you.

#2 Ferndale Field — This is an obvious location to party in VERY small groups, especially at night, but NOT recommended. The last time THIS author was there (many, MANY moons ago), the author happened to step in a pile of human (that’s right, HUMAN) feces in the dugout.
Eeewwwwww!!!!

#3 The Indian Field – This is/was located at the very top of Montgomery Street. You would have to make your way through brambles onto the foot-marked path that would lead you to various concrete structures.

No one ever could give me a straight answer as to why these structures were there or what their prior purposes were. However, these structures were freaking AWESOME to mess around on, spray paint and to just generally hang with your “peeps.”

I still to this day wonder what they used to be. Armament hangers? Midget villages? Off-site Roswell alien testing sites??????

I don’t know if you can still party there, but I vaguely remember watching the sun come up at the back end of the cemetery on the top of the hill on Logan St.

I”m not sure either, Spook, but I know you can damn well try! However, I believe it is much more difficult for our younger, partying kin these days in order to thwart the “fuzz.”
Ahhh, what good times we’ve had!

Ahh….The midget village. The sasquatch of Coal Region.
I always thought this was a Coal Region myth but was never quite sure. When I was in 8th grade some enterprising and adventurous classmates set out to find the village but were unsuccessful. I’ve met people who say they’ve seen the village and the midgets but I think they’re liars. Can anyone confirm this exists?

I’ve also heard of a so-called “confirmed” midget village located in the deep woods between Marion Heights and Mount Carmel. Try as I might, my friends and I could never pinpoint its exact, alleged location.
I’ve also been told that it is located behind the spooky cemetery that is on the road that connects Kulpmont with Strong (forget the road # but know there is a “cemeie” and assisted living home on it). It’s supposedly some distance behind the altar at the end of the dirt road inside of the cemetery gates (tiny little houses, tiny yards and tiny doorways, HOW CUTE!). This altar location is also (amusedly?) the sight where we would play the game of holding a lighter (the ONLY illumination) at the altar and invoking the name of Mother Mary or some such entity for unknown reasons other than to scare us into crapping our pants in the complete darkness.
Oh, all of these Urban Myths and youthful games…if only!
I also wish that there was a confirmed sighting of this “midget village!” Bowling, anyone (ha, ha)!

(tiny little houses, tiny yards and tiny doorways, HOW CUTE!)
LOL, all could think about is: “We welcome you to Munchkin land, La-La-La-La-La!”

I think an official “Shamokin.Biz” expedition needs to be launched to ascertain the whereabouts of this alleged “Midget Village”.

To quote “Tin Man,” a TV , mini-series of 2007 featuring Zoe Deschanel, “You’re out of your tiny, little minds!!!”
