Shamokin, PA: A Good Place to Die

Great place to walk your dog!
There must be some kind of way outta here…

Well, truth is, that’s what they all think. ‘least at first. Next thing you know 60 years go by and all you’ve got to your name is a bar stool bearing your ass groove.

Ahhh…good ol’ Shamokin, Pennsylvania. We did not build this city on rock and roll.

Ho-Butt!!

About William S.

William S. is a former and current Coal Regioner (who has seen the great beyond...) living in Shamokin. He has two singular daughters, the best dog in the world, and most of the time his sanity. When he's not designing websites or blogging, William plays acoustic guitar until his fingers bleed and fiendishly devours sour patch kids at an alarming rate.

Looking at old pictures of Shamokin sure stirs some mournful memories of my childhood.

On the plus side, the dirt path winding around this cemetery always reveals decent ground-finds–if you know what to look for!

Don’t know any Weimers, but Nawrocki is a familiar name as well as Nye. Know a Paul Nye and Bobby Nye. Wish I was in Cali right about now…but yes, folks are still living and breeding in Shamokin.

I feel *exactly* the same way some days, but I’d sit inside a running, garaged car instead. Just saying.

I love your site and really enjoy reading your posts. I married into Shamokin 4years ago and often find myself looking around wondering, “does anyone see what I’m seeing.”. I have lived all over and have never experienced life like this. Don’t misunderstand me, some of it is positive. For example, I love being able to walk into, and around, town when the weather is nice, but there is also the negative. Such as, walking down from ferndale is almost impossible because of “big dogs, little fences” problem. So much about this place completely frustrates me, but it does because the citizens don’t realize the notnormal nature of their actions or the actions of those around them. Mentally challenged people in a bar is sad, not entertaining. Having your Childs bus stop at your local bar and not your home, not normal! Picking up your children from the bus stop at 3pm in pajamas?? What is with the pajamas shamokin??? Thank you for being aware of the ironies and falasies that provide the back bone for this blackhole of a town. You have offered a flashlight in what I thought was an endless tunnel. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading from Shamokin; where I continue to where my visitors pass in an attempt to reassure myself that one day I will fight the damaging forces that hold all of us here and venture back out into reality.
