Shamokin’s Best Party Spots (Part 2)

More Party Spots! I told ya’ll I’d be back.

I realize that all of you faithful readers have been anxiously awaiting the next installment of [Hot Party Spots]. You may now indulge yourselves…

THE SATURN – Located just about ½ mile past the Bunker Hill baseball fields along a crater-ridden road, you will reach this planet-named sight. Just as a BTW, the preferred method of transportation is a jacked-up Jeep, a four-wheeler or just plain ole walkin’ shoes.

After arriving you will find yourself atop of a large flat spot (with plenty of parking) which reveals a decent view of the Marion Heights area. However, due to previous coal mining expeditions beneath this “mountain,” the sulfur smell is that pungent that you may give the WTF Stare to your fellow party-goers thinking that they may have had a bit too many baked beans at the RCA grounds picnic that day.

Many a party spot gives insight into the reason of the spot name, yet the Saturn still baffles me. It does not contain a liquid hydrogen core nor does it have rings surrounding it made of water-ice and dust particles (like the actual planet, duh).

THE CAVES- also conveniently located out the Third Patch road. Unfortunately, you must leave your car on the main stretch and walk up a fairly steep hill and along a confining, jungle-like path for about a quarter of a mile. Don’t not be surprised to come back to a painted-up, dented car.

Lugging kegs and/or coolers, etc., is extremely difficult, even if you try to use one of those hand trucks or if the coolers had wheels. You would most likely lose your beer, break said hand truck or cooler or possibly break your arm.

When you finally reach the caves, you can strip down to your skivvies and walk (don’t dive) into  the grimy, yet surprisingly refreshing, water. But as my mother always warned me (more like scared the shit out of me), “Watch out for sink holes!”

THE WHEAT FIELDS- located a short way along the right hand-side of the Second Patch road. I find the spot to be aptly named since you park in a field in which there are weeds that grow which resemble, well, wheat (duh).

Beware of people shooting rifles about 20 yards away along a higher dirt road. They sometimes like to use cars – namely yours – or even yourself for targets. However, if you enjoy collecting spent shells for some type of Art Nuevo, *DING DING DING* you’ve just hit the jackpot, my friend.
Warning: “Mountain party spots” may no longer be applicable concerning availability or ease of partying. These spots may be owned privately and we in no way condone trespassing. Also, we are not responsible for the terms “Ho, Butt” or “Ho, Bud” being being constantly tossed around at said parties by drunk individuals.

Is the painted “ET” still at the caves? I remember that jumping from the “ET” at the caves was the test of manhood in Shamokin. Kind of the like the way the indians used to sneak up on sleeping bears and slap them on the back.

I’ve done neither, so I guess that makes me less than a man in either culture.

Don’t know, haven’t been there in years. However, we used to jump from that high spot, also. We used to rate the jumps on how much you “struggled” during the downfall. I did it once, never again. I think I almost hit my head on a submerged car or something of that nature. Maybe a petrified body????
