The Ultimate Shamokin Question: Ho-Butt or Ho-Bud?

Okay. Am I the only one not clued in on this debate?
Yesterday I saw an older gentleman walking down Market Street in Shamokin wearing a purple shirt that said “Shamokin” and below that “Ho-Butt.”
About a month ago, just a few blocks from my house, I noticed a license plate on a sweet ’56 Harley that clearly read “Ho-Bud.”
So…which is it? When I hear friends and other people say it, it sounds like it could go either way.
And what is the history behind Ho-Butt/Bud? Who started saying it? How long ago?
Dear readers, please write in with your comments to enlighten all of us.
Thank you!

It depends entirely on home many Genny Cream Ale’s you drank.
After about 9 or 10, it takes to much effort to pronounce a “T”.

Thanks, LW, but meaning is still unclear. I don’t think it was meant for us to actually know, like U.F.O.’s, or else know one REALLY knows the answer, LIKE U.F.O.’S. I still use the terms interchangeably, so let the debate continue!!!!
Thanks for your input and keep us posted on your thoughts,

If you really want to know the definition you should travel up to the ferndale hill and go to the pool room. Ferndale is where it all started. I believe it started when someone would ask for a cig. Ho butt you gotta butt bud. SO, I think it is interchangeable.

I went to the pool hall and heard plenty more than “butts” and “buds” that’s for sure, but Legend I think you’re right. Thanks for the hook up. I even got lucky!

Saw a Shamokin garbage truck that had HO-BUD painted on the side. My friends in town say “ho-butt”. But I dunno, I’m from Kulpmont and their version of it is “hey buddy”. Lame. I was always led to believe it was “ho-butt” until I saw that garbage truck.

butt : you, friend. “Yo, butt, hand me dat hammer.” Often used as “Ho Butt!” when calling out to someone. “Yo” meaning “you”. “Ho” short for “Hello”.
Sometimes “Ho, Bud.”
In plain English, “Hey buddy.”
